2000 Rodney's Vineyard Syrah
Cool Pacific breezes bathe the vines with the elements that create great wines -- cool evenings and warm days along with a long hang time. Sloping vineyards with alluvial soil, and a trellis system that stresses vertical training and sun exposure, all compliment the excellent fruit that was harvested in November 2000. We used five different French oak Burgundy style barrels (70% new) with medium plus to high toast during the aging of this wine.

Opaque black/purple in color with aromas of blackberries, licorice, olives, roasted herbs and smoked wild game. A full-bodied wine that is perfect for a night by the fireplace with a bowl of hearty stew.

The Rhone-like qualities of the 2000 Syrah Rodney's Vineyard can be seen in the bouquet of bacon fat, dried herbs, pepper, creosote, black cherries and blackberries. Fleshy, medium to full-bodied, and soft, it is ideal for drinking over the next 4-5 years.

California Grapevine: 88 points
Medium dark purplish ruby; attractive, spicy, leathery, earthy, blueberry and blackberry fruit aroma with a note of black pepper; full body; big, concentrated, cedary, leathery, black cherry and blackberry fruit flavors; medium full to full tannin; dry, hard finish, lingering aftertaste. Needs another two to four years of bottle aging. Highly recommended.

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: 1 puff, 87 points (scale 0-3 puffs, 1-100 points)
Very sweet, highly ripened fruit and lots of showy oak combine in the outgoing aromas here, yet a less than likely note of dirty leather emerges in the nose and stays the course for the length of this bottling's otherwise deep and highly oaked flavors of vanilla, cream and caramel. Sufficiently tannic to commend keeping, the wine is a little soft in balance and is geared to mid-term aging.
