2002 Fess Parker's Vineyard Syrah
Formally known as Rodney's Vineyard, Fess Parker Vineyard Syrah is chosen from different blocks of the 38 acres of syrah planted. The combination of warm daytime temperatures and cool evenings resulting from the unique east-west orientation of the Santa Ynez Valley creates ideal conditions for grape maturation. The Syrah is planted on the upper mesa behind the winery, well above the valley floor.

This is definitely a cool climate Syrah. It shows many of the characteristics of Santa Ynez Valley that have made it famous for growing Rhone varietals. Black charries, blackberries, herbs de Provence, cracked black peppercorns and olives laced in smoke and vanilla bean. The aromatic and flavor profiles are the perfect combination for bistro style foods and great conversation.

California Grapevine: 91 points
Medium-dark purplish ruby; attractive, forward, rich, sweet black cherry and blackberry fruit aroma with overtones of vanilla; full body; big, rich, lush blackberry fruit flavors; well balanced and structured; lingering aftertaste. Appealing to taste now and also shows good aging potential. Very highly recommended.

Robert M. Parker, Jr.'s The Wine Advocate: 90 points
Harvested in late October, this wine reveals a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a floral, slightly herbaceous, expressive bouquet as well as flavors of black fruits, white pepper, tapenade, and smoke. This medium to full-bodied, strikingly pure, beautifully made Syrah will drink well for 5-6 years.
