Jeff Cohn
JC Cellars Proprietor and Winemaker Jeff Cohn has an extensive background in both wine and food. After receiving a Culinary Arts degree from Johnson and Wales Culinary Institute in Providence, Rhode Island and a Bachelor of Science in hospitality management from Florida International University in Miami, Cohn worked in several high profile positions in the hospitality industry, including director of Food and Beverage for Windjammer Cruises in the Caribbean.
Throughout his years in the hospitality industry, it didn’t take long for Cohn to discover his passion for wine. The more he learned, the more he wanted to learn, until he realized that becoming a winemaker was his ultimate goal. With the encouragement and support of his family, Cohn moved to California in 1993, where he attended Fresno State University and earned a Masters in Agriculture degree in Chemistry, with an emphasis on Enology.
Upon graduation, Cohn joined Rosenblum Cellars as Enologist. Working Directly with Kent Rosenblum, Cohn quickly moved up the ranks and in 2000, Cohn was promoted to winemaker and shortly there after was named vice president of winemaking and production.
During his time at Rosenblum, Cohn was also making wine for his own label, JC Cellars, and in February 2006, after 10 years of winemaking for Rosenblum and with the good graces of his colleagues, Cohn left to solely focus on JC Cellars.
Through his winemaking prowess and allure to Rhône varietals, Cohn is known for pushing the limits. Whether it is partnering with famed French winemaker Pierre Galliard to blend his Côte Rozier Syrah with Cohn’s Rockpile Vineyard Syrah, traveling to Northern Rhône to create a Condrieu/Viognier blend with French winemaker François Villard or giving whimsical names to JC Cellars’ serious wines, Cohn has proved that JC Cellars wines are anything but ordinary. When Jeff is not making, drinking or reading about wine, he spends his time with his family. His other interests include basketball, pétanque (the French version of bocce ball) and running. Jeff loves Alameda with its Victorian houses and while taking long runs to relax, has put in a lot of miles running around the island checking them out.
