2006 Eaglepoint Ranch Vineyard Petite Syrah

"Eaglepoint Ranch offers sweeping vistas that take in hundreds of miles of the mountainous terrain of Mendocino County and beyond. The ranch’s mountain soil sits at an elevation of 1700 feet and late-afternoon breezes help keep the grapes at a moderate temperature. This vineyard is truly amazing yielding wines with extreme concentration and intense varietal character." - Jeff Cohn

Tasting Notes

There are some wines that just seem to take you places. This one in particular fits right into a Frederico Fellini movie, featuring aromas of blackberry liquor with subtle bright notes of blueberry that slowly fade into smoky Crème Brulée. Not even Fellini could ask for a better cast of flavors. Smoky hot road tar mingles with freshly slit vanilla beans and warm blackberry pie. A firm backbone of tannin adds to the seemingly never-ending finish.

JC Cellars Eaglepoint Ranch Petite Sirah Mendocino County 2006

94 points • $45 • 197 cases made

A real mouthful of Petite—rich and thick, with boysenberry, pepper, huckleberry, blackberry and cassis flavors that are incredibly muscular and full-bodied.  More classy than rustic, with a long finish.  Drink now through 2015. —M.W.

The vineyard is on a mountainside overlooking central Mendocino, and is famous for the potency of its red wines.  This Petite Sirah is enormous in fruity extract and tannins.  Just detonates on the palate with blackberry jam, blueberry, milk chocolate, mushu plum sauce, black pepper and smoky oak flavors.  But those tannins tug and obstruct full enjoyment.  Give it through 2009, and it should develop in the bottle for many years. —S.H.
