2007 Sweetwater Springs Vineyard Petite Sirah
"Around the corner from the Rochioli’s illustrious West Block Vineyard, lies a small but sublime vineyard called Sweetwater Springs which features Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. Dueling cool fogs from both the Petaluma wind gap and the mouth of the Russian River allow for extended hang time, and grapes that flirt with the apex of ripeness." - Jeff Cohn
Tasting Notes Despite the thick tannin this wine is an intense mouthful of ripe blackberry & blueberry flavors with delightful details of mineral, hazelnut & spice box. A wildly exotic muscle man of a wine, drink it now and enjoy the core of ripe fruit with the backbone of sturdy tannin or over the next several years for a more supple and fruit-driven quaff.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 91+ points From the Russian River, the opaque purple-colored 2008 Petite Sirah Sweetwater Springs possesses massive concentration and depth as well as surprisingly sweet tannins. This is a big, lusty, muscular red that begs for 4-5 years of cellaring. It should drink well for two decades thereafter. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 92 points Another limited production cuvee, the 2007 Petite Syrah Sweetwater Springs Vineyard (79 cases) is a monstrous black/purple-colored wine that is very fairly priced, but impossible to find. Wine Spectator 92 points Dark and deep, showing baked earth aromatics and heavily concentrated black fruit and cassis flavors, with hints of spicy sasparilla and tobacco notes. A wall of dense tannins provides incredible structure, yet this maintains a terrific sense of balance, gaining momentum on the finish. Drink now through 2017. 79 cases made. –MW |
