2006 Broken Compass
"I could go into all different stories of why this wine was made, but the truth be known, I get bored easy and I like to play, and play I did. A little from here, a little from there, just a touch from this vineyard and just a bit more from that vineyard! The blend is from select barrels and earmarked for the blend. Some might say, including my wife, ‘Why do this when you have so many beautiful wines already?’ My answer is and always will be, I am never satisfied and I always want people to taste the passion we have. This wine has been a great experience for me, a chance to have no boundaries, explore, get lost in the blending process and for a moment of time truly feel that my compass was broken. I was content to stay in the moment, with no need to find my way home. Get lost in this wine, and remember sometimes all you really need is a broken compass." -Jeff Cohn Tasting Notes Featuring concentrated aromatics of blackberry and cherry liquor with more subtle notes of ripe raspberry weaving itself in and out of the glass. Old world in nature reflected in the smoked wild game, herbs de Provence and hints of bitter Swiss chocolate.
2007 Broken Compass – California l $40 l 92 points A bold, expressive style, with gobs of dark berry fruit, black cherry, plum, wild berry and boysenberry joining a floral, spicy graphite note. Rich, full-blown, intense and concentrated, big and extracted, yet balanced. Ends with ripe tannins and a touch of heat. Drink now through 2017. 82 cases made. –JL Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 93 points Another long lived wine is the 2007 Syrah Broken Compass (82 cases). More acacia flower, camphor, licorice, pepper, chocolate, and blackberry fruit characteristics are present in this offering.
As deep, as rich and as generously fruited as any of winemaker Jeff Cohn’s new releases, this show-stopping bottling rewards by also being the best balanced of the bunch. Its broad, complex aromas of ripe berries, vanilla, violets and chocolate are echoed in kind by its layered, impressively complete flavors, and, if showing a youthful edge of grippy finishing tannins, it never loosens its hold on positively succulent fruit. Its juicy intensity is such that it almost invites drinking while young, but this is one that will pay handsome dividends over time, and it deserves to be set aside for six to ten years.
James Laube Wine Spectator: 92 points A ripe, juicy, fleshy style, brimming with wild berry, blackberry and black cherry fruit that's supple and harmonious, if made in a big, full-bodied style. Ends with a long core of pure black fruit flavors. Syrah. Drink now through 2014. 460 cases made. –JL
